Living an authentic life

Socrates taught that the unexamined life is not worth living. This tutorial will put this bit of classical wisdom to the test. Focusing on Existentialist thinkers Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Martin Buber, we shall seek to identify the qualities that make a human life authentic. Although these writers are alike in their Existentialist approaches, they differ widely in their ethical, metaphysical, and spiritual conclusions.

Negro spirituals are songs created by the Africans who were captured and brought to the United States to be sold into slavery.

The comedies of Aristophanes

Throughout the semester we will explore the meaning, philosophy, and psychology of the comic as we see it in Aristophanes and elsewhere - what makes something funny. Is all humor contextual or are some of its elements intrinsic or universal? What did the famous actor mean with his last words, "Dying is easy, comedy is hard"? We will discuss the philosophy of comedy and perhaps see how much we miss Aristotle's lost treatise on the subject.

Organizing For The Future

Over the past 5 years the Grinnell College Libraries has done more than make adjustments and keep up to date with changes to technologies; products; and types of materials that we are adding to our collections. Instead, we have attempted to re-create our organization for future needs.

Noyce Commons: relevance of layout, amenities, and space designation to college students

While the depth of a room in a building has often been found to lead to reduced interaction, this was not the case in Noyce Science Center in May, 2009. Facilities available to students were important to room use, and corresponded, in part, to student opinion on study preferences. While study areas separated the science majors, they did not exclude non-majors and underclassmen. In fact, more non-science-majors use study areas in Noyce than do science majors, though science majors spend more time in these.
